Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes associated with anti-Hu antibodies in an ovarian cancer patient: a case report and narrative literature review
ABSTRACT
This article focuses on ovarian cancer associated with paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) linked to anti-Hu antibodies. Starting from a rare and unusual clinical case, we review PNS from a global perspective, then focus on PNS related to ovarian cancer, especially those linked to anti-Hu antibodies, discussing the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and lastly, treatments.
Specifically, the patient exhibited cerebellar ataxia and nausea concurrently with abdominal pain, leading to further investigations that revealed progressive thrombocytosis, a significant pelvic mass on imaging, and the presence of anti-Hu-D antibodies. Notably, surgical removal of a carcinosarcoma-like tumor resulted in a significant alleviation of the paraneoplastic symptoms.
IMPACT STATEMENT
This work sheds light on a rare and poorly understood clinical condition: PNS associated with anti-Hu anti-bodies in ovarian cancer. By combining a detailed case report with a narrative review, this article provides a comprehensive overview of a condition that remains underrecognized in both clin-
ical and research settings.
The manuscript offers essential tools and insights for clinicians and researchers to better navigate the complexities of PNS, highlighting the need for heightened awareness and further investigation. By delineating the current state of knowledge and identifying gaps in our understanding, this work paves the way for more effective diagnosis, treatment, and future research endeavors, ultimately contributing to improved patient outcomes in this challenging field.
